Wood Windows: Nature at its Traditional Best

Wood windows used to be the only choice for window frames. For hundreds of years they did the job tirelessly, adding warm wood tones and character to homes that are now centuries old. You see, that's the thing about wood. It may need some maintenance but it lasts -- for hundreds of years.

This most natural of window options is still a favorite with architects and designers, and this is not only for the obvious aesthetic reasons. Wood has other qualities that sometimes go unnoticed -- though not by the professionals. Anyone who works with wood knows why it has been the traditional favorite for so long.

Wood not only looks exceptional but it also boasts greater strength in proportion to weight than other window materials. In other words as windows grow ever more vast in size, wood becomes the only material strong enough to span the distance and hold the weight of the glass.

Wooden framed windows are also the most energy efficient. Wood is a natural insulator whereas metal frames are natural heat conductors. Wood is 400 times more effective than steel and 1800 times more effective than aluminum as an insulator according to the Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA).

Wood is also naturally sound absorbent. It will literally soak up extraneous noise. Wooden window frames keep their shape better than other frames so that they are easy to work with and open and close.

Buying wood windows not only frames your view in nature's own classic way, it also preserves it. Building professionals still consider wood to be the only truly completely renewable resource in the building industry. It is true that wood does require maintenance but so does anything worthwhile.
