Vinyl Clad Storm Windows: A Winning Combo

Vinyl clad storm windows are a particularly versatile solution for those who want to enhance the energy efficiency of their windows without going to the trouble of replacing the originals.

Choosing the correct storm window can be a challenge. Though these secondary windows do not add substantially to the insulating performance of single glazed windows they do reduce air movement in and out of existing windows. In this way they can make a substantial difference to comfort levels and the monthly energy bill.

Storm windows come in a variety of guises from the disposable type that you shrink-wrap to the original panes with a hairdryer to the more substantial kind that, if carefully chosen, can actually enhance the look of the home. Wood storm windows fall into this category. They have many advantages: they can support a good glass pane, they insulate and seal well and they look good.

Unfortunately wood storm windows also require the most maintenance. They tend to weather with age and expand and contract according to the weather. Aluminum frames are lighter and stronger but they tend to insulate poorly and fall into disrepair. Regular vinyl windows can be relatively weak with a tendency to expand and warp in high temperatures.

This is where vinyl clad storm windows provide the best of both worlds. With wood on the inside and a vinyl composite on the outside they provide the best compromise between aesthetics and practicality. The two materials combine to offer superior strength and easy maintenance so that homeowners who prefer the warm look of wood can enjoy it without the hard work.
