Keep out the Cold with Triple Glazed Replacement Windows
Okay, I am sure you've seen the advertisements on TV for Rolox triple glazed replacement windows - you probably only missed it if you never watch TV. They slice and they dice, and they keep the cold out - so how exactly does triple glazing work on windows. Whether double glazed or tripled glazed the concept is the same. The window units are manufactured with three layers of glass - with a small airspace between each layer of 1/4" to 1/2". Argon gas is then injected into this space forcing all the oxygen out and the unit is sealed so the gas does not escape. Argon gas does not transmit the hot or cold as easily as normal air does. So these voids in the window unit, actually act as small insulators for your window. So if double glazing is the standard does that mean that triple glazing is better? Yes, typically it does. With two independent airspaces, instead of just one, you have effectively doubled the insulating properties of your replacement window unit. The interesting thing is that many of the major manufacturers only make double glazed window units. However, with just the one airspace you actually have a thicker airspace than on the triple glazed units, so the difference is not as great. Triple units are about double in price, which is another consideration. So do your homework when buying triple glazed replacement windows, sometimes the hype is better than the results.
