How to Install Replacement Windows - A Step-by-Step Guide

So your thinking about a good do-it-yourself project, we have just the guide on how to install replacement windows. We have broken our guide down into just the typical key steps, your project may be more or less extensive, so use your judgement.

Step One: measure you existing openings. This is most easily accomplished by measuring the window opening after you have removed the window, but probably not the smartest way to do it. The best way is to measure from jamb to jamb of the window. Write this measurement down and go to the window store, they will help you buy the right size.

Step Two: Take the existing window out of the wall. You will need to remove the casing (trim) on both the inside and outside of the wall. There should be a gap after you do this where you can see nails or some type of fastener holding the window in. Simply cut these nails with a reciprocating saw, and the unit should easily be removed.

Step Three: Get some help with this step - it takes a couple people to install the replacement window. Lift the new unit into the opening. You will need to install shims to square up the unit. Your window should come with instructions on how to do this.

Step Four: Most windows come with installation instructions - so just follow the instructions on the unit.

While not comprehensive, our "How to Install Replacement Windows" guide tells you the minimum steps to accomplish your project. If it seems like this project is to involved for your skills, it is best to turn to a professional contractor.
