Through the Glass, Classically: Double Hung Wood Windows
Double hung wood windows are just what the words say: double hung and made from wood. What could be clearer (yes, pun intended)? Double hung means they consist of two independently moveable pieces, which slide up and down, one in front of the other. Wood means trees. Wood means natural. Wood means, or at least should mean, solid, old fashioned, quality construction. Double hung windows are appropriate any place, unless there is not good access to opening and closing, like over a kitchen counter. Wooden windows are appropriate in any climate, from Minnesota's frigid winters to Alabama's sultry summers. Sometimes wooden windows are now made clad in vinyl or aluminum, which adds an appreciated element of easy maintenance. You really can't go wrong with such a classic element of architecture. Today's fittings make this style easy to use, easy to clean with a nice touch of timelessness and continuity to many different house styles from many different eras. They add a simple elegance to any home. Are your old double hung wood windows so ornery they only open with the coaxing of a soap bar or the cruder bribe of a hammer? Don't give up on the style yet. New double hung wood windows are a breeze to use and are so energy efficient they hardly seem related to their predecessors. Evolution? No, in this case at least, it's a matter of intelligent design.
