How to Compare Home Replacement Windows: A Primer

You have measured and considered, made lists and talked to your friends, and you have made the really big decision of what kind of window you want: wood or vinyl or aluminum, a decision pretty much based on your climate, your budget, and your personal taste or aversion to painting. Now you need a method to compare home replacement windows among the many manufacturers.

If you like to do your work on the computer, you can usually go straight to the manufacturer's website to get specifications on their windows or you can do your work on paper via your library's magazine resources-the great thing about libraries being that they have wonderful people called librarians who will do their best to help you get the information you desire.

Most windows are at least doubly glazed now, though you may not need this feature if you live in a warm, dry climate, so all you really need to examine here is whether windows have additional insulating options, like a layer of argon gas or various e-coatings, if energy issues are your issue. You also want to see if a line has the special sizes and shapes you want and any special hardware you like.

Finally, you've got to check the price. Don't assume anything here: ask for an exact and binding quote. Don't take any windows without this!

Prepare a notepad, virtual or real, on which you list the considerations that matter to you and then enter the data from the various lines. If you compare home replacement windows this thoroughly, you can't help but reach a good decision.
