Casement Windows: Wide Open to the World

Casement windows are for those people who love to bring the outside inside. With their side hinged sash opening wide to 90 degrees on a vertical plane they really are the most effective way to persuade fresh breezes into your home.

Where double-hung or sliding windows open to reveal a straightforward gap for air to slip through, the wide-open sash of the casement extends outward and actually scoops up the gentlest breeze. The whole mechanism is opened with a hand crank or slide bar on the inside base of the unit.

Because of its generous, no holds barred, opening it is not only the window option with the best ventilation and possible egress but also the easiest to clean because its operating design makes it more accessible.

These very popular windows work with any style home but they look particularly good in the Craftsman, Tudor or Mission style of architecture. They also lend themselves well to bow windows and 30 degree and 45 degree angle bay windows. They are more expensive than the double-hung and sliding windows because of the complex mechanism for opening and closing but they are also the most secure window option for that same reason.

The theory is that casement windows are not only more energy efficient as far as ventilation is concerned but also when it comes to keeping warm air in on those cold winter days. Where other windows combine compression seals with sliding seals the casement uses only a compression seal. Not only does the seal work better immediately, but when the sliding seal begins to deteriorate with time the compression seal keeps on working.
