Awning Casement Windows: Light and Air Without the Bad Weather

Awning casement windows are a variation of the window theme that is a favorite with architects. Placed above and below windows and doors they add architectural interest to a room.

Awning windows, sometimes called hoppers, are a version of the casement window that is wider than it is tall and hinged on top with the sash swinging out from the bottom.

Often accompanying traditional double hung windows they provide light and ventilation even in bad weather. When the wind is howling and rain lashes at the windowpanes these smaller windows with their tilting sashes are the ideal means to allow air to flow through the house. These short and wide casement windows also provide a solution if placed high on walls in a room where a combination of light and privacy are needed.

Because the design differs significantly from the typical casement window that opens sideways from left to right or vice versa, the hardware must be properly matched to ensure optimal efficiency. The sash opening must not exceed the regular 45-degree opening and smaller angles may improve operation proportionately.

The way the awning casement window sash is hinged to the frame can make a crucial difference to the quality of the product. Undersized hinges will cause the awning sash to close under its own weight. Be sure to check that the hinge counterbalances the sash weight throughout the full range of its motion.
