Using Aluminum Windows to Frame Views
If the view is the thing and you need a large expanse of glass window in a
strong and rigid frame to enjoy it, then aluminum windows may just be the
answer. Aluminum is not the most popular material for windows, neither is it
the most aesthetically appealing, but it does have certain qualities that
may make it worth considering.
Decades ago this material did not meet industry standards for performance
properties like thermal insulation but the windows are making something of a
comeback as adjustments are made to bring them up to standard. Aluminum is a
medium that readily conducts heat and cold so its uses in residential areas
with stringent energy codes are still dropping. Despite this, it is still a
durable low maintenance option for areas where extremes in temperature are
not a problem. It is also a solution where large panes of glass are needed
to maximize views.
These windows are light, flexible and strong and will not over extend the
budget. They have a very respectable life of anything between 20 to 30 years
and the newer, more modern versions have a slightly improved energy saving
capacity. Aluminum window frames are also fully recyclable so they are
environmentally friendly.
Because of its thermal conductivity aluminum can be cold to the touch. Do
not place windows where people will be leaning against them. The frames
require no painting and maintenance amounts to little more than an
occasional caulking. Window frames are easy to clean and strong though they
may pit and dent with time.
Aluminum clad wood windows are another possible option to the regular
aluminum windows. The wood and aluminum combine to form the best of both
window worlds offering a strong, solid frame that is virtually maintenance
free.
