Aluminum Storm Windows: The Light, Low Maintenance Alternative

Aluminum storm windows have much the same advantages and disadvantages as aluminum regular windows. On the plus side they are light and strong and easily customizable, on the negative they are poor insulators.

The U.S. Department of Energy maintains that storm windows are the cost effective solution to the problem of heat loss and gain through ill-fitting single pane windows. Where the modern, double or triple glazed, low-e replacement window is first prize in the fight to keep the energy bills down, the storm window provides another option at a fraction of the price.

The interesting thing is that storm windows do little to reduce energy loss through insulation. The energy saving happens by reducing air movement into and out of existing single-glazed windows. This means that aluminum can function as well in a storm window as any other material that ordinarily has a higher R-value for energy efficiency.

Add to this the fact that convenience is a high priority in purchasing storm windows, and the light, strong aluminum frames start to sound like an attractive option that has the advantage of being extremely low maintenance.

Though storm windows can be installed on the interior or exterior of the primary window there are good reasons for choosing the interior version. These are easier to access for installation and removal and they also inhibit air filtration best because of their proximity to the primary window.

'Invisible' aluminum storm windows are now becoming a popular choice for use in historic renovations both residentially and commercially where original windows can then be preserved. They are custom fit for small to very large areas and finished in complimentary custom colors.
